2026 Campout: Newberry Volcanic National Monument – August 6 – 9, 2026

This year’s campout had at least a dozen interested hikers reserve their campsites early in the year for an August adventure at Cinder Hill campground. However, about half ended up cancelling at the last moment. Heat, wildfire smoke, and sometimes just plain life dictates what happens to us on these planned outings. Fortunately, for those who did attend, the heat and smoke were NOT detrimental to the enjoyment of the trip.

On Thursday, Paul, Amber and new member John Herring hiked up to the top Cinder Hill, logging in over 5 miles.

On Friday, Diana Pace joined the group to hike the Paulina Lake Loop. The weather was beautiful and the sights were tremendous.

On Saturday, it was up to Big Obsidian Flow, followed by a hike on Sunday to the summit of Little Crater via the Little Crater Loop Trail.

The group also participated in other activities such as paddle boarding and kayaking, which were quite refreshing during the summer heat. A drive to Paulina Peak and short hikes to Paulina Falls capped off a wonderful time at Newberry Volcanic National Monument.
