General Information and Q & A

Who are we? Friends of the Umpqua is a hiking club is based out of Roseburg, Oregon. We are a non-profit group dedicated to the wonderful avocation that is hiking. We hike every other Saturday and our hikes are generally within a couple of hours drive from Roseburg.

Anyone who shows up can hike! Our hikes are open to the public at no cost. We are a supportive group welcoming hikers of all skill levels. Although we call ourselves a “club”, you do not have to join to hike with us. It’s as simple as looking at our schedule and deciding which hike(s) you want to attend and just show up. So come and join us in the great outdoors!

We hike every other Saturday, rain or shine! Our hike coordinators are experienced hikers who are familiar with the local trails. Our hiking destinations are generally a two hour drive or less, covering everything west of the Cascades, south of Eugene, and north of Ashland. For coast hikes, we typically stay between Gold Beach to the south and as far north as the Florence area. Unless we are hiking in the immediate Roseburg area, plan on a full day of adventure on the road and on the trail with fellow nature lovers and hikers!

If you want to be on our email list and become a bona fide member, membership dues are only $10 per year per household. You will receive updates on any schedule changes, upcoming events, etc. Attend our quarterly meetings where we determine our hikes for the next quarter. Go to our Membership page for more information.

The group meets at 8 am in the Douglas County Courthouse parking lot off Fowler St., behind the library, unless otherwise advertised or designated by the coordinator. All hikers must sign in when we first meet in the morning.

General Questions:
Can I bring my dog?
This is by far the most asked question! We welcome well-behaved pets and expect owners to have full control over their pets at all times. As long as the area we are hiking in allows dogs, you are welcome to bring your friendly trail companion. Please be respectful of other hikers and clean up after your pet.

What should I bring?
Each person should bring water, lunch, layers of clothing including raingear. You should wear seasoned boots or proper hiking shoes.

How far are we going?
In general, most hikes take an hour to an hour and a half driving time each direction, but can occasionally take longer. Listed driving time to trailheads and hike length are estimates only.

Can I get a ride?
Of course! We encourage carpooling, but it is not required. Expect to share gas expenses if you do. The driver decides on carpool expenses taking into consideration distance traveled, amount of gas consumed, number of passengers etc.

What safety precautions should I take?
Each hiker hikes at his or her own risk and is responsible for his or her own health, safety and welfare. Please heed all instructions from the hike coordinator prior to and during the hike. During the hike, stay with the group and on the trail. If lost, stay put. Hiking destinations may be changed due to weather and/or road conditions or other concerns.

How can I get more information about the hike?
Call the hike coordinator for more information if you have questions.

Where is the hike schedule?
The schedule is listed here on our Hiking Schedule page, as well as on our Facebook Events page. Hikes may also be advertised in the Roseburg News Review.
