South Slough Reserve – January 17, 2026

Hike coordinator: Rheo Wheeler

Narration by Rheo Wheeler

We had quite the group of merry travelers for our hike to South Slough. Over by Charleston, this is the first nationally recognized area set aside for the study of salt estuaries in the U. S. Three cars from Roseburg met up with 2 cars from the coast on a cold, but beautiful sunny day. Sixteen in all enjoyed the shady trail downhill to the tidal area for our glimpse of the sunny and calm water features this area has to offer. We explored all the trails along the water with Lane flying his drone over the watery expanse, and then it was on to the overlook area for a snack.

Back up the hill into the shaded trail along a zig zag back to the interpretative center for our next adventure. Some headed over to Bastendorff Beach area to fact find for a future hike, some went back to Roseburg for an early day, and we went over to 7 Devil’s Wayside for a walk on the beach. Beautiful with no wind on the beach. 3 + miles at the slough and 2+ miles on the beach, time well spent outdoors.

The water was like glass in this part of the slough

It’s how we capture those aerial views for the club videos
They either heard something funny or they just looked at Lane
It was a cool walk along the creek
