Haceta Head and the Hobbit Trail – September 13, 2025

Hike coordinator: Rheo Wheeler

Narration by Rheo Wheeler

We had a group of 13 for the Hobbit Trail hike on the 13th. Seems as if we were pushing our luck, but the sun did shine down on us as we stair stepped over the cape. This sounds like an easy 2 + mile hike to the beach on the other side from Heceta Head lighthouse, but it is a virtual stairmaster of nature. We extended our distance by crossing highway 101 and adding the valley trail to bring us to the day use area of Carl Washburn State Park and the beach for lunch.

Then it was a stroll down the beach to pick up the Hobbit Trail and yet again stairmaster ourselves back over the cape to complete our 7 mile feel good hike.

The coastal fog adds an eeriness to the forest
Large trees tower over the trail
Lunch on the beach: They must be having sandwiches! 🤣
Long walks on the beach… it’s what we do 😉
