Hike leader: John Malone
Narration by Rheo Wheeler
A group of 4 hearty souls headed to the wet and windy coast for a hike at Dellenback Dunes. This is a traditional regular hike we do to remind us of the desert-like area we have on our beautiful coast. The trail took us through the campgrounds and spit us out a little north of the “Big Dune” so we could check out the “Ghost Forest”. From there we headed north again around the next “Tree Island” before heading west to parallel the deflation plain to find the trail to the beach. On our way to the trail, we encountered an area where the wind had swept the sand away and exposed 4 expended 45 shells from military practice left over from years ago. We each came away with a trophy from our exploits.
The trail to the beach is usually an almost swim in some areas, but this time our boots remained only wet from the earlier rain. We had a nice lunch on the beach although the skies finally quit spitting rain, the clouds remained. Then it was back on the trail to the dunes and our trek across the vastness to the “Big Dune” and our trail back to the car. We were relatively dry by the time we reached the car and agreed that the weather wasn’t all that bad. A total of 8ish miles, you get to add on due to the sand walking.
