FRIENDS OF THE UMPQUA
Takelma Gorge
10-6-07
by Diane Rannow
Only 8 of us head up to the Upper Rogue River today.
The fall colors are glorious as we drive up
hwy. 138 along the North Umpqua River. When
we get closer to the Diamond Lake area the fall
colors turn to the grays and white of winter
as we see snow along the road. After a
few miles on hwy. 232, we drop back down in
elevation and back to the fall colors.
Gary, Nancy and Lois need to be back early to
Roseburg, so they head off at a brisk pace. We
won't see them again until after lunch when they are
heading back out. As always, this is a
beautiful hike. We see the river in many
moods... calm & placid with the fall colors
reflected in
it's surface and rushing and churning as it
squeezes itself into narrow channels through the
gorge. Some of the leaves haven't turned yet
and some have already fallen. Only see one or
two mushrooms and they are just conks and LBMs
(little brown mushrooms).
We hike a total of about 5 miles.
