July 12 Mt. Ashland Meadows. Past Ashland
towards the Siskiyou summit, we will take the Mt. Ashland
exit for a trail head which will lead us on a moderate 6.8
mile hike in alpine meadows with terrific wild flowers and
magnificent views of Mt. Shasta which seems to loom ever

YellowJacket Loop. This is a beautiful hike less than
an hour from Roseburg, following Little River Road to
Hemlock Lake. It is a moderate 5.6 mile loop with a 7.2
detour if desired to Flat Rock or to Dead Cow Lake. The
wild flowers are spectacular and elk have been spotted on

August 9 Rocky Ridge. Rocky Ridge is a 8 mile
moderate round trip with an option of shorter or longer if
desired. It has dramatic views of Fish Mountain and Castle
Rock’s lava plug. The views of the drainages are
impressive with purple mountains stretching off into the

August 23 Union Peak. This is rated a moderate 9
miles on the oldest mountain in Crater Lake national Park.
The mountain is approached on a nearly level trail with
the actual final .8 mile an invigorating climb up three
dozen switchbacks some with carved rock steps. The views
are well worth any climb with Mt. Shasta, Mt. McLoughlin,
and the Crater rim on display. Call Richard at 784-2083.
Sept. 6 Crater Peak. This is a moderate 5.4 mile
which delivers one of the most dramatic views possible of
Crater Lake. It is a true volcanic crater with a lovely
wildflower meadow and a summit bowl. Elk sightings are

Sept. 18 Planning Meeting. We will meet at 6
p.m. at Singleton Park and will rent the pavilion if
possible. Bring your favorite pot luck dish, eating
utensils and ideas for great future hikes. The park is off
Curry Rd. Go out Garden Valley Blvd. And turn west at the
little grocery store. Look for the park sign. For more

Sept. 20 Rattlesnake Mt. This is a
moderate six mile loop with 1,750 feet of elevation gain
in the Rogue-Umpqua Divide wilderness with lovely
subalpine wildflowers and great views of Fish Mountin, Mt.
McLoughlin, Union Peak, the Crater Rim , Mt. Scott,
Thielsen and Bailey. For info call Richard at 784-2083.
The group meets at 8 a.m. in the Douglas County
Courthouse parking lot off Fowler St. Behind the library ,
except on July 12 when they will meet in the BLM visitor’s
parking lot because of the traffic congestion during
Graffiti weekend. Bring lunch, water, rain gear, mosquito
repellent and expect to share gasoline expenses. Any
individual hiker can decide how far to hike, the distance
depends upon the wishes and abilities of each hiker.
Hikes rated in the following manner: Easy, 5 miles or
less and 1,000 ft. elevation. Moderate, 5 - 10 miles and
up to 2,500 elevation. Difficult, 10 miles and or +2,500
elevation.
