FRIENDS OF THE UMPQUA HIKING CLUB – SCHEDULE
JULY 31 TO OCTOBER 2010

August 7             Mt. Scott    in Crater Lake National Park is a moderate 5 mile in and out hike which  includes a 1,030  foot elevation gain.  The trek  has fantastic views in all directions and offers the only place from which you can view the entire rim of Crater Lake.  The climb up is short and steep and starts at an elevation of 7,900 feet.  For more information, call Lois Soulia at 541-673-4197.

Aug. 21               Cow Creek,  19 miles  out of Azalea, is a well graded 6 mile moderate trail which starts with a fording of the 40 foot (wide)  Cow Creek and gains 1700 feet through a woodsy canyon to a gravel road and an historic  rustic shelter at Railroad Gap.   For more information, contact Gary or Nancy Waugaman at 541-672-4540.

Sept. 4               Cowhorn Mountain is a moderate to difficult nine mile out and back hike and at the summit it  is  an elevation gain of 1,847 feet.  It is one of the most beautiful hikes anywhere and the hiker who decides not to make it to the summit can still enjoy wonderful views including Crescent Lake, the Three sisters and Diamond Peak.     The trail is along the well-graded PCT so scrambling is limited to the very top and is the only difficult part of the hike.   For more information, contact Jane Flewelling at 541-679-3070.

Sept. 18             Alta Lake  is part of the Seven Lakes West chain and is a moderate 8.4 mile hike round trip east of Medford and  past Butte Falls .  There are several options so hikers should discuss just how far each wants to go.  The scenery is worth the effort in many directions.   For more information, call Richard O’Neill at 541-784-2083.

Oct. 2.               Vivian Lake  is a moderate  8 mile round trip with an 1600 foot elevation gain which has waterfalls, and more  waterfalls, starting with Fall Creek Falls and Salt Creek Falls, the state’s second largest.  The trailhead is out of Oakridge, 5 miles west of Willamette Pass on Hwy 58.  For more information, call Jacky or Rick Sohn at 541-673-4222.

Oct. 13.             Scheduling/planning meeting.  Meet at 6 p.m. in the Mercy Conference Rooms center,  room No. 1, for a potluck at 6 p.m. and at 7 p.m. to schedule the hikes for the next quarter.  The Conference room is up the stairway between Parkway Medical supply and Office Depot on Stewart Parkway.  Bring something for a potluck, eating utensils and your good ideas for hikes for the next few months.  For more information, call Ray Jensen at 541-672-2172.

Oct. 16.          Tipsoo Peak is a moderate 6 mile out and back  hike to the 8,034 foot Tipsoo Peak which offers one of the best panoramic views for the effort ,with  an 1,784 foot gain in elevation.  The trail is well graded in a high mountain forest with an alpine feeling and views of the back of Mt. Thielsen.  For more information, call John Malone at 541-673-1973.

Oct. 20.            Heceta Head to  the Hobbit Trail  to Carl Washburn  Park beach, is  about a 5 mile easy  hike with possible extensions.   The basic hike starts at the parking lot for the Heceta Head Lighthouse, we’ll climb the bluff and proceed down to pick up the Hobbit Trail which connects to the Carl  Washburn portion, go through the camp and finish up on beach portion of the hike.  The Hobbit trail is well named, it would be no surprise to meet Frodo amongst  the coastal spruce and moss.         Call Lois Soulia at 541-673-4197 for more information.

The Club meets in the Douglas County Courthouse parking lot at 8 a.m.  Bring lunch, water, rain gear and be prepared to share gasoline expenses for a car pool.   Each hiker is responsible for his or her safety and makes the decision just how far to hike.  Hikes may be changed because of weather or other adverse conditions.

Dues in the amount of $5 per person or family are due in April, 2010.  If there is a yellow mark on your name on the address label , ( for those without e-mail) this will be your last schedule until dues are paid.  Send  dues  to Craig Brummett at P.O.
