FRIENDS OF THE UMPQUA
Rogue
River East, Graves Creek to Whiskey Cabin
November 26, 2011
Coordinator, Jane Flewelling
Narration and
Pictures-Bill Riley.
On Saturday, 26 NOV 2011, 12
Friends of the Umpqua hikers, including Kurt and
Wendy from New York drove south to the Wolf Creek
exit then proceeded to Graves Creek parking lot to
start their hike down the Lower Rogue River.
It was fairly foggy starting out from Roseburg and
going over the pass at Canyonville, but later the
fog burned off and left us with a thin cirius
overcast. The sun did actually peek out twice.
Again the weather was perfect. The group made a
similar hike on 6 MAR 2010, down both sides of the
Rogue, and it was much warmer then.
We hiked just over 3.1 miles in to Whiskey Creek
Cabin. The cabin was first built around 1880 and has
since been rebuilt or upgraded several times since
and now is a landmark. It was interesting to try to
trace the old water flumes which carried the water
down from upper whiskey creek down to the river.
Although most of the group stopped for lunch around
the cabin, Walt, John and Edwin did proceed on down
the river another 30 minutes or so, but they didn't
quite reach the coast. Distance from Graves Creek
parking to Foster Bar is about 41 miles so we
decided to save that for another day.
