There were 13 FOU
members with some extended families (altogether 16) who
participated in this year’s campout (Ray & Linda J, Richard
& Dolly O, Lois S, Jane F, Jennifer C, Dante L, Susan L,
John M, Don O, Phil H, and Edwin C) and also non-member
Lane. People stayed from 2 to 5 nights between July 27th
and August 3. We camped at Lava Lake off the Cascade Lakes
Hwy in Central Oregon.
Linda & I
arrived first on Tuesday, made camp, and grabbed a nice site
for multiple members coming the next day. Then on Wednesday
we hiked 5 miles to Doris Lake and back. There were still
plenty of mosquitoes wherever there were meadows, lakes, or
deep woods – not too pleasant but the lakes were nice.
On Thursday
Lois, Edwin, Don, Phil, Linda, and I hiked up Fall Creek to
Green Lakes which is an outstanding hike with Fall Creek
living up to its name with plenty of falls. The Green Lakes
sitting in a basin below South Sister were their usual
gorgeous selves with views of Broken Top, South Sister,
Bachelor Butte, and others. At this point some stopped, ate,
and returned to the TH for about a 9 mile hike. Edwin, Phil,
Linda, and I continued going north another mile or so,
climbing a ridge where we had a superb view of North,
Middle, and South Sister as well as the back side of Broken
Top and Central Oregon beyond. We played in the snow some
and then returned to the TH for a long, tiring 13 miles.
On Friday
Lois, Linda and I kayaked Hosmer and Sparks Lakes while
Jane, John, Edwin, and Jennifer hiked Fall Creek, Green
Lakes, and north to a ridge top. It was another outstanding
day for all.
Saturday came
and I organized a large gang of us (Richard, Dolly, Lois,
John, Phil, Jennifer, Lane, Edwin, Jane, Linda, and myself)
who hiked from Devil’s Lake to the Wickiup Plain and did a
loop back on part of the PCT for about 10 miles. See
separate article written by Richard.
Most people
left on Sunday except Ron and Phil. Linda and I did a last
minute kayak on Little Lava Lake (source of Deschutes River)
before leaving - beautiful. Ron and Phil hiked up to Moraine
Lake and on part of South Sister climbing trail on Sunday
and they were the last to leave on Monday.
Lots of
campfires and of course Mexican Train Dominos.
Everyone
commented they had a great time on the campout and that’s
what it’s all about.
